Many homes built in the 1950s have been renovated and updated. Scores of homes are located on the Intracoastal Waterway while others are located on adjacent canals. Spanning a half-dozen city blocks and bordering Fort Lauderdale, Pompano Beach, and the Village of Sea Ranch Lakes, the entirety of Lauderdale-By-The-Sea resides on the narrow, beachfront barrier island that is separated from mainland Broward County by the Intracoastal Waterway.
Many homes date back to the '30s. They have been updated, yet maintain their early character, according to Jeanne Glenn, with the Las Olas Isles Homeowner's Association. There is proximity to the beaches as well as wonderful Las Olas Boulevard's shopping area, the Broward Theatre of Performing Arts and the Fort Lauderdale Museum of Art.
Although some multi-dwellings and low-rise condominiums line Las Olas Boulevard, the community maintains a single-family dwelling profile.
Like much of South Florida’s history, Lake Ridge’s lore is eclectic. The community had its beginnings in the ’50s when a portion of the area was a penal farm.
Times have changed. Most of the cement-block houses built in the ‘50s, are two- and three-bedroom/ one-bath residences. Since it’s less than one mile from the beach and downtown Fort Lauderdale, and near Interstate 95, the area became desirable for buyers, explained Rixon Rafter, with the Lake Ridge Civic Association.
Oakland Park is known as "The City on the Move," in ways outsiders might not realize. Astronaut Brent Jett graduated from Northeast High School here and flew on three space shuttle missions. No one knew sleepy Oakland Park, original home of Porky's, would become - or remain - such a desirable place to live.

Town homes have also become part of the landscape. All homeowners take pride in their front yard gardens. The neighborhood is continually active in improving entryways and surrounding areas into the neighborhood. It's a neighborhood where neighbors look out for each other.
This is a community of change. "Many older homes built in the '40s and '50s which are in the majority - are being brought up to code,” said Reid Morgan, former President/Council of Civic Associations. The neighborhood-oriented area is transitioning from private homes to three-story duplexes. Homes have increased in value and with asking prices on the rise.
Gardens are common and kept in prime condition. Hundreds of flowering trees have recently been planted by the Beautification Committee.
